Mount Emblem Cemetery, Elmhurst, Il

This beautiful Windmill sits in Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, Il.
It is the oldest standing windmill in Illinois and the only "Dutch Smock" style windmill in a North American cemetery and one of only a few dozen remaining in the US.
The cemetery was once a working farm. Construction on the windmill began in 1865 and took three years to complete. The structure was not made from local timber but prefabricated pieces ordered then shipped from Holland! Multiple additions were made to the windmill in the next 12 years by the original builder and then he sold the mill and 10 acres to another farmer in 1877.
Sometime between then and 1925 when the land was sold to the Mount Emblem Association, the mill ceased operations. The exact time is unknown, but when the cemetery association bought the land, it was said to have been still for many years.

Originally the association planned to demolish the windmill but later decided to renovate it to a museum.
The cemetery was not dedicated until June of 1936, having taken 11 years to transform the farmland into a beautifully landscaped setting.
For many years the windmill would play music over loudspeakers on Sundays!
The mill has had its challenges over the years with harsh storms causing damage to the structure several times. In 1990 a bad storm almost destroyed the entire mill. Each time a storm has damage the mill, the Mount Emblem association has restored and or renovated, even winning an award for their efforts in 1956. After the storm in '90 the mill was deemed to be unsafe and was closed to the public.

The meaning of the term "Potter's Field" is widely understood.
Ever wondered why it's called that?
In the time leading up to Christs Crucifixion, Judas guided Roman soldiers to Christ for his arrest. As a signal for them to seize him, Judas kissed Christ on the cheek. For this he received 30 pieces of silver. Afterwards, the torment of the betrayal was so severe that he eventually became overwhelmed by guilt and despair. He tried to return the money, but the priests refused it as they considered it blood stained. Judas dropped the money before the priests, walked to a nearby field and took his own life.
The Priests purchased the field from the potter who owned it using the silver Judas had returned. They then designated it as a burial ground for strangers, the unknown and those without family. Since then, individuals who are unidentified or have no friends/ relatives who claim them after they pass, are buried in what is now known as a "potter’s field."

In October 2012 during a weekly trip to Bachelors Grove Cemetery in Midlothian, Il, my friend Karl K and I walked to what we named the "spooky tree" for the very first time. It is a large old tree that used to sit right on the creek bank a short distance from the cemetery. That day as we waked we talked of a Virgin Mary statue that was said to have sat in the tree for many years but was now missing.
A few weeks later, November 11, Karl, my daughter Sam and I took this same hike to the tree. On our way back Karl was a little bit ahead of us when he suddenly stopped. As he looked to his left imbedded in the creek bank was the statue we had talked about that first day.
I brought the statue home for Sam to clean up but found myself intrigued by it. I did some research and learned the history of Our lady Guadalupe.
I cleaned, painted and restored the statue over the next week. When I finished is when the real story begins. An amazing chain of events that changed my life and started a path to healing and a very intense spiritual connection.
